Georg Jensen – About the Designer
Georg Jensen grew up close to nature just north of Copenhagen. As a result, the rough nature became his main source of inspiration. As an artist Georg Jensen was endowed with a great talent and various artistic skills. He understood the fine craftsmanship and appreciation of the materials combined – a unique understanding that made it possible for him to turn his vision into reality. He received the greatest compliment when the The New York Herald Tribune saluted him as the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years.
Georg Jensen’s philosophy was to create innovative designs that are both beautiful and functional, but also to support other design talents. He was very confident in his skill, but he was also curious about others’ perspectives. In this regard he was not afraid to take risks and push boundaries and over the years he collaborated with both talented metalworkers, jewellers, designers and artists.
Some of the design icons Georg Jensen has partnered with are Henning Koppel, Arne Jacobsen, Marc Newson and Zaha Hadid and recently Sophie Bille Brahe, to name just a few. These collaborations have enabled Georg Jensen to stay on top of its game and remain relevant, as they have pushed boundaries, defied conventions, and reimagined what design can be. A tradition kept on after the death of Georg Jensen in 1935 to this very day.
